Fascinated to see your message. I remember my great aunt talking about the Gubbinses in Peru and found the following in a letter written by a relative from Peru in 1885.
"Mrs Wells, her sister Alice & Mrs Evans with all her peculiar faults are about the only decent people, for Mrs Gubbins, though a real lady is seldom heard of."
All this tells one is that there were Gubbinses there that early. My family were also from Ireland and some from the Limerick area. I notice that the name Russell occurs in relation to the Gubbinses and wonder if we might be related to the Gubbinses through some distant Russell connection. Alice Russell , about whom I have ben wable to find out very little, married John Dartnell in the late 1700s and their son Richard went to Peru in about 1845.
The study of the Irish in South America deserves a PhD student!
