I recently found my g-grandmother on the 1880 census with her last name spelt wrong. Her name is Melina Guay but they spelled it Melina Gauy. All I can say is thanks for Soundex or this would have been missed.
Here is the census as it was listed. All were from Haverhill, Essex, Ma and were born in Canada
Name age year sex relationship
Aldea Gauy 17 1863 female dau
Alphonsine Gauy 24 1856 female dau
Antoine Gauy 48 1832 Male self
Clora Gauy 5 1875 female dau
Cornine Gauy 7 1873 female dau
Delina Gauy 19 female dau
Gauvreay Gauy 36 1844 female wife
Lilly Gauy 3 1877 female dau
Mederic Gauy 12 1868 male son
Melina Gauy 9 1871 female dau
I have my g-grandmothers parents listed as
Antoine Guay and Alphonsine Gauvereau
As you see the only Alphonsine listed is a child. I wonder if my g-g-grandfather had remarried after my g-grandmother was born. It is hard to say as we don't have any dates on either of her parents.
