A flow of immigrants from Belgium to Guatemala arrived between 1840-1858, when permission was granted to the Belgian government to establish a colony at Santo Tomas. The attempt failed due to lack of support by the Belgian government. Most of the immigrants died, while others returned to their country. The few that adapted to the tropics and the latin culture moved to Guatemala City, where many of their descendants are found today. A few immigrants from other european countries arrived at that time. Were the tickets being sold in Luxemburg intended to recruit colonists for Santo Tomas?
