Thanks, Ed. That is the most concrete info I have been able to find yet. It looks like I have some fascinating reading ahead of me.
But first I need to ask: if the roster I cited is for a local "non-called-up" militia unit (as you explain), then have you already been able to find out what actual fighting unit these Weisenberg Township men served in, and in what battles? That's the most important thing to me at this point.
If you don't know this, I am happy to dig through the paper sources, but I just thought I would ask you first.
I wonder if the following is significant to identifying the actual fighting unit: At Ziegels Church are buried several of the men listed in the roster I cited. But instead of mentioning Northampton County or Weisenberg Township, their tombstones read "3 Co 3 Pa Inf". Is that perhaps the unit they actually fought in?
