Hi, Thanks for the reply.
I have gotten the majority of my records from the LDS site, familysearch.org. I also went to the town hall in Orland and bought a book called 'Best Remembered: Orland, Maine 1800-2000', published by the town of Orland in celebration of the town's Bicentennial birthday. It cost $10 and is available at the Orland Town Office and the Orland Historical Society.
Another source was a copy of: 'A genealogy of the Gross Family of New England, Ten Generations from 1635, compiled by Edna May Gross of Ithaca, N.Y. 1965.' I never met Edna but received my copy from my cousin Stephen Gross who used to live in Ithaca.
In the book Best Remembered, on page 3 it states 'Joseph Gross, the first settler, came to Orland in 1764. He settled on the Castine Road. The Castine Road was chosen as it had access to the water and arable land. Water was the only means of transportation at that time since a bridge was not yet built over the Narramissic River. Men came by way of Fort Pownal to settle and spread out in Plantations No. 1-6. In 1765, Ebenezer Gross, Brother of Joseph, came to Gross Point.'
From other information I have read, Bucksport and Orland were one and the same, and since this book states that Orland was incorporated in 1800, it may have been a part of Bucksport. Also, Bucksport was known as Buckstown at one time. The book is quite interesting.
