Dear Susan,
I am just starting to research the Groce/Gross family inNorth Carolina. Surry Co.
I have Henry Gross b. abt 1805-07 NC, from Cumberland Co.,Ky census 1850. His wife was Annie Thacker and she was from Ky.
I think he may be son of Henry Groce and Ann Scrithfield VA.
This is reported from a Greatgreatgrandson of Henry's through family lore. I was wondering since you seem to know so much about this family if this sounds familiar.
We find a Henry Gross in Cumberland Co.Ky in 1830 census with wife both him and her 15-20 yrs old.There is also a Simon Gross in this census several households down same page he has 1 m 5-10, 2 m 10-15, 1m 15-20 and 1 m 40-50 1 f 0-5, 1 f 5-10, 1 f 30-40. No Henry in the 1840 census here. W e find Henry Gross in same county with wife Annie and 5 children in the 1850 census males P. 18, John 16, George 12, Wm. 7 and a female M. 9.
Henry shows up in Cumberland county records about 1848 recieving a Land Grant.
Although the family story says he was the son of Henry Groce and Ann Scritchfield I question if he could not be related to this Simon? And with other Surry NC families moving to Clinton Co., Ky about the same time, with Clinton being across what is now Dale Hollow Lake. I felt there may be a connection.
What do you think and do you have any info on this line.
I would appreciate your help greatly.
Thanks,
Nancy
