Thank you for your information about Zimri Groshong. My interest in this search is because of my gr gr grandfather's connection to the mining branch of the Groshong family in Missouri and Wisconsin.
The name Uriah is in itself an unusual name.Zimiri, to me, is even more so.My great grandfather, who was born in Wisconsin Territory or even while it was Michigan Territory, was well acquainted with one branch of the Groshong family since they all shared a log cabin for some length of time(and the cabin was one-half his since he and another miner had built it during the Black Hawk Indian uprising near Dubuque, Iowa, (then either Michigan Territory or Wisconsin Territory.)
My gr gr grandfather Thomas Shanley was elected from what became Grant county,Wisconsin, and what was then Michigan Territory, to sit on the first territoricallegislature. It was held in what is today Grant county, Wisconsin. My great grandfather was born during that time in Hurricane Grove, Wisconsin Territory (which included what is today Iowa). It is during this time that an Uriah Groshong is found in that part of the country, and he knew at least and perhaps was related to the branch of Groshongs who were staying in this large cabin which Thomas Shanley and Henry W Hodgesbuilt.Hodges married one of the Groshong girls whose family was living with these two miners.
I agree with you that Zimiri, like Uriah, probably has its origins in the Christian bible.I have searched for both on the internet.
Also, this large double cabin in frontier Wisconsin served as a church for the circuit rider preacher from Mt. Hope, Wisconsin Territory, who preached there.
My great grandfather was born in that cabin. And it was he who named his last son, who was born in Wisconsin after it became a state , Thomas Uriah Shanley. That is my interest in Uriah Groshong, who was mining in Wisconsin around this time. For a friend I wonder if Uriah and Zimiri are the same word.
Also,I have wondered if Zemerial is also Jeremiah
I am also interested in the name Uriah Groshong because of a friend who is tracing one who mined and farmed in Wisconsin in those years, who went to California at a later date.In other words I have found some evidence that Uriah might have been Zimiri.
My grandfather was known as Urie (diminutive for Uriah?)And if you say that Zimiri has a Swiss origin, could it be the Uriah from the bible?I am not a biblical scholar, but I know that Hebrew words are different from English words. And a correspondent online is searching for the origins of her ancestor named Uriah Groshong, who seems to have been in Wisconsin for a time.
I am not a biblical scholar, but I do know that Mary, Jesus's mother, in Hebrew was Miriam. And in the word Zimiri there are elements of Hebrew words. These early church goers often took words from the bible to name their children.
Back to Missouri. Thanks for locating Zimiri Groshong in St. Charles, MO.There was a Samuel Groshong there. And Samuel is also a biblical name.Plus my gr grandfather was a Methodist preacher as well as a farmer.
