Hello Robin,
You could be right in the official name for Esom, but I believe the problem has more to do with him being Native American than anything else. I have checked the census for 1850-1870 for Claiborne County and while I find Anna Laws and children listed, Esom is notably missing. In the 1850 census the first line on the page is left blank, with Anna listed on line 2, followed by children. I don't know enough about the rules applied to Indians in the area at that time but it could be that they were not permitted to be listed in the census. The name Salim/Selim interests me because of its likely relationship to my grandmother's name, Celina. She was daughter to William "Henry" Laws, youngest son to Esom and Anna.
