B. Grogan appears on the 1870 U.S. Census for Prairie Bluff, Wilcox Co., Alabama. His age appears to be 52, but could be 32, so he could have been born in either 1818 or 1838, in Tennessee. The census reports that his father is foreign born. Does anyone know what the initial B. stands for? His wife is listed as Elizabeth Grogan, age 30, born in Georgia. Does anyone know her maiden name? This 1870 census shows their children as : John W. Grogan, age 10, born in Alabama; Joseph E. Grogan, age 6, born in Alabama; Robert T. Grogan, age 7, born in Alabama; Emma T. Grogan, age 4, born in Alabama; and Nancy J. Grogan, 7mos. old (that was an error on the census. Nancy Jane Grogan was actually 7 yrs old in 1870). Then, in the 1880 U.S. Census, the children's parents, B. Grogan, and Elizabeth Grogan disappear. Does anyone know what happened to them? Between 1870 and 1880, the Grogans had 2 more sons, Jim, b. abt 1872, and George, b. abt 1876, and who were both born in Texas. Therefore, we know that this Grogan family moved to Texas between 1870 and 1872, but something happens to the parents between 1876 and 1880. In the 1880 U.S. Census fo District 71, Precinct No.1, Hill Co., Texas, 6 of the Grogan siblings are living as boarders in the home of Allen and Virginia Witty. They are: John W. Grogan, age 20, born in Alabama, farmer; Robert Grogan, age 17, born in Alabama, farmer; Emma Grogan, age 14, born in Alabama; Nannie (Nancy) Grogan, age 11, born in Alabama; Jim Grogan, age 8, born in Texas; and George Grogan, age 4, born in Texas. Nancy Jane Grogan goes on to marry Leonard Jasper Hornsby in Hill Co., Texas on 10 May 1885. She is my great great grandmother. Does anyone know what happend to her parents and siblings?
