My understanding is that the Gruen watch company was founded by Dietrich Gruen, who was my great-grandfather's younger brother. I'm aware of two sons of Dietrich Gruen and Pauline (Whittinger) Gruen: George John Gruen (m. Emily Thauwald) and Frederick Gustavus Gruen (m. Louis Fischer). That's about all I know of that side of the family. My great-grandfather was Jacob Gruen (born Jul. 12, 1839 in Osthofen am Rhine, in what is now Germany). He had at least two brothers, one who remained in Germany and the other Dietrich who, as I said, I believe came to Cincinatti and founded the Gruen Watch Company. The parents of these three brothers were George and Susanna (Barr) Gruen. There may have been other children. Jacob Gruen came to St. Louis, married Sophie Sommer, and founded the Gruen and Brothers Wine Importing Company. Jacob and Sophie (Sommer) Gruen had 9 children, one of whom was my grandmother. BTW, I've never heard of spelling the name, which is 'Grün' in German, with an 'o', so I overlooked this forum until now. Notify Administrator about this message?
