Maybe, maybe not. Likely the respondent to such a question may have interpreted it to be inquiring about whether or not they had ever had any formal education which, at that time, a sizeable percentage of the population had not. Certainly not impossible for the 72 y/o person to have been currently taking a class at that time though.
