In Sept 1860 Thomas Groce took his family to Livingston Co., MO. Bands of lawless men roamed Livingston Co in those days and, on one occasion, a band of these outlaws was going to shoot Thomas unless he told them where the key to the barn was. Thomas said he was old and ready to die and was not about to give them the key. The outlaws then threatened to kill Nancy. That got them the key and also the horses. Bedding and linens had to be hung in trees for fear of having them burned by lawless men. Thomas' son, Abraham (1834-1910) returned to Patterson, IL in 1880. Abraham Groce m Alice Virginia Thompson and had 5 children: Ida May; Harry M.; Cassandra ("Aunt Cass" as I knew her); John; Gertrude C.
