Peter & Catherine Gross from NC to Kentucky to Illinois
Posted by: Michael Holler (ID *****3014) Date: January 20, 2007 at 12:04:53

I am looking for any information on a Peter and Catherine Gross/Groce. Peter and Catherine were located in the 1850 census for Scott County, Illinois living with Green and Emiline Sappington:

Peter Gross Not Stated, Scott, IL abt 1778 North Carolina

Catherine Gross Not Stated, Scott, IL abt 1785 North Carolina

There were three other Gross families in Scott County, Illinois located near them.

Poten Gross Not Stated, Scott, IL abt 1805 North Carolina

Jane Gross Not Stated, Scott, IL abt 1809 Kentucky

Thomas Gross Not Stated, Scott, IL abt 1806 Kentucky

Martha Gross Not Stated, Scott, IL abt 1817 Michigan

Elijah Gross Not Stated, Scott, IL abt 1815 Kentucky

Maria Gross Not Stated, Scott, IL abt 1820 Tennessee

I am assuming that Poten(Peter), Thomas, and Elijah are the sons of Peter and Catherine. Peter Sr. is not found in the 1860 census but his wife, Catherine, is found in Township 14, Scott County, Illinois living with W. G. and Catherine Sappington.

W G Sappington Township 14 Range 12, Scott, IL 38 abt 1822 Kentucky Male

Catharine Sappington Township 14 Range 12, Scott, IL 28 abt 1832 Illinois Female

Leighton Sappington Township 14 Range 12, Scott, IL 12 abt 1848 Illinois Male

Louisa Sappington Township 14 Range 12, Scott, IL 11 abt 1849 Illinois Female

Isabella Sappington Township 14 Range 12, Scott, IL 9 abt 1851 Illinois Female

Clayton Sappington Township 14 Range 12, Scott, IL 7 abt 1853 Illinois Male

Newton Sappington Township 14 Range 12, Scott, IL 5 abt 1855 Illinois Male

Delia Sappington Township 14 Range 12, Scott, IL 3 abt 1857 Illinois Femal

Catharine Gross Township 14 Range 12, Scott, IL 70 abt 1790 North Carolina Female

I believe that Green and Emiline Sappington are the same as W.G. and Catherine Sappington since Leighton and Louisa Sappington are also listed as children of Green and Emiline Sappington in the 1850 census. I also believe that Catherine/Emiline is their daughter.

If Peter, Thomas, Elijah and Catherine/Emiline are the children of Peter and Catherine, then we know that they started in NC and left between 1805 and 1806 and settled in Kentucky and lived there until at least 1815. Some time after 1815 they moved to Scott County, Illinois.

In the 1800 census I found two Peter Gross' as well as the following in NC:

In the 1810 census I found a Peter Gross as well as the following in Kentucky:

John Gross Burksville, Cumberland, KY
Peter Gross Burksville, Cumberland, KY

Peter Gross Paoli,Cumberland,KY
Simon Gross Paoli,Cumberland,KY
John Gross Not Stated,Wayne,KY
Jacob Groce Not Stated,Fleming,KY
Edmund Groce Not Stated,Harlan,KY

I was unable to find any of these families in the 1830 and 1840 census, probably due to spelling.

Has anyone come in contact with any of these names before?

Thanks in advance.

Mike Holler
