I am a descendant of a Heinrich Grob but am not sure if it is the one that came in 1743 or the one that came ca. 20 years earlier with many other Mennonites. We think in any case the 2 or 3 are interrelated. Thye first to leave Switzerland were being persecuted for religious freedom. They were Anabaptists,,many Mennonites and Amish. In the late 1730s there 2 groups of people wandering Switzerland and exhorting people to emigrate to the new World. Some were paid by trading companies and colonial agents to help settle the wilderness and be cheap labour and the others were Swiss emigrees returning to make known their good fortune in Pennsylvania.

Whereas the Swiss officials were more than happy to be rid of the heretics as well as the incurable drunks and laze abouts, they didn't want the trained and skilled handworkers or farmers to leave... especially with any money. Zurich had just passed very harsh laws concerning the exodus and Bern followed suit. Only with permission were people allowed to depart. But many Swiss were determined to leave and they illegally sold or signed over their goods and property and many left in secret. They wanted to leave before the prohibited laws became strictly enforced and they might lose any chance to turn their property into Gold or Silver.

Do you know who was Heinrich's Children and spouse were? and I read on one list, that this Heinrich was to go to North Carolina and not Pennsylvania.
