Hi again Eunice,
Yup, you're right on - the "700" I mention is the GROAT-SHUFELTs and then the gang from Canada (which we are still trying to determine if they are connected to the GROAT-SHUFELT set). In addition to these main branches (trying to help on the learning curve) you will see a set of GROATs from Scotland that arrive in Canada early to mid 1800s I recall (one Malcolm, settles midwest, Edmonton and area - they are NOT related to either of the above). Also when checking LDS there is one rather glaring error ... My 6G-Grandfather Caleb GROAT was NOT the son of one Malcom GROAT and Gilles BARNETT as the LDS states - this is almost, absolutely certain (always some doubt wriggle room of course) since he the father is placed in Scotland at the time records show supposed son Caleb in VT and QUE. in the 1780s.
Finally, I think you will see other immigration waves of German GROATs/GROTT/GROUT into PA and area - but most of these happened in the mid to late 1800s - look at the 1880 census on LDS and you'll see indications of birth of parents and you'll know if they're early or later settlers. Many of the Canadian GROAT line followed the same immigration patterns of Americans - settling first in Michgan in the 1830s-1850s, then Iowa, MN, and other points west - again the Census is handing in finding out parenting and an indicator if you're looking at one line or the other (the New Yorkers, the Canadians, etc.)
Do write me if you want to get the address for the website - I think it would save you a TON of "re-inventing the wheel" in your search - me and other Groat researchers have been very carefully compiling as much as we can and CORRECTING ERRORS that are found in many RootsWeb sites of the family that get promulgated (just like us families, a life of their own some days).
Hope this helps and happy hunting.
Andrew
