There are some 80 documented variations of the Grinnell spelling. A list of them is available on the Grinnell Family Association website at http://www.gate.net/~grinnell/. Illiteracy was rampant in the U.S. up until early in the 20th century, so it is not a stretch to consider a semiliterate town clerk had to guess on spelling of surnames phonetically. Sometimes they were right, sometimes not...
There were a number of Grinnell descendants from Maine at that time. I found one who could be one of yours:

They had 2 children:
3523. i. Lucy Celestious GRINNELL, born 8 Apr 1886.
3524. ii. George Frederick GRINNELL, born 6 Jul 1887.
They had 2 children:

3524. ii. George Frederick GRINNELL, born 6 Jul 1887.
Is this the right one? In all likelihood, any Grinnell/Grannell/etc. individuals found in New England around the time you mentioned (early 1800s), relate to the Grinnell progenitors, Matthew Greenell and Rose French of Lexden, Essex County, England, and from whom nearly all American Grinnells descend.
