Jennifer,
A good place to start is with Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia by Judge Folks Huxford. It's a multi-volume set that he created in the 1950's and 60's.After he died his son kept the geneaeology set going by adding new volumes. They have sets in most libraries around the state including the Univ of Georgia, probably Mercer and others. You can go to their website at www.huxford.com.
My Grandfather was Adlai Bee Griner. His father was Martin J Griner son of Daniel Griner. Martin is a family name so your grandfather was named a known family name. All of the GA Griners came into Savannah.I have back to their entry into Savannah.I can trace my ancestry back to John Jasper Griner (Jasper being another family name).
It was not uncommon for settlers to inter-marry with the local Indians. My great grandmother Bass was part Creek Indian. When Pres. Andrew Jackson sent all of the Eastern tribes to Oklahoma, many families hid their relatives to keep them from being sent to reservations. When the Indians were dispossesed, the State of GA sold off their lands to settlers. My ancestors traded their lands around Savannah for land in and around Nashville, GA.3 brothers left including Daniel, who was my great great Grandfather, left the Savannah area in the mid 1800's and Daniel settled in Nashville.
It sounds like your side of the family stayed in and around Savannah.Judge Huxford's volumes will help you locate your relatives. While it's not perfect, it is a wonderful source.Good luck cousin :)
Sincerely,
Mike Buglioli
