James H. Grindstaff served in Company M of the 8th Missouri State Militia ("MSM") Cavalry, which was a Union military unit. He enlisted January 30, 1864, in Neosho, Newton County MO and mustered into service March 22, 1864, at Springfield MO. One of the sergeants of the 8th MSM Cavalry was Moses E. Banks, whose mother was Charlotte Grindstaff. The Bankses and Grindstaffs came to Southwest Missouri from Carter County TN in the 1830-1835 period.
However, the descriptive roll for the 8th MSM Cavalry says that James H. Grindstaff, age 24 in 1864, was born in Barren County, Kentucky.
After the war, there were both criminal and civil court actions in Newton County MO involving "J. H. Grindstaff" and "Henry Grindstaff." Codefendants in these suits were James Sexton, whose mother-in-law was Charlotte Grindstaff Banks, and John Henry, whose mother-in-law was Elizabeth Grindstaff Simmerley. These actions involved arson charges growing out of the Civil War.
I have a website on Newton and Barry Counties MO. The roster of the Stone Prairie Home Guard, note 1, and the page on Jollification MO both have more information: http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~cappscreek/http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~cappscreek/.
I would very much like to know how all of the Grindstaffs in Southwest Missouri were related and would be interested in learning anything else you may know about James Henry Grindstaff or any of his family.
