Grimes, Absalom: Confederate Spy (MO)
Absalom Grimes, the infamous Confederate
Mail Runner and spy for the South married
Lucy Glascock of Ralls County, Missouri.
Lucy's sister, Elizabeth married William
Glascock, son of John Hendren Glascock,
who was the son of Downing Hendren Glascock Sr., my ggg grandfather.
They held a double wedding.
Absalom was notorius for his disguises
and captures and escapes.He was
pardoned by President Abraham Lincoln
for his actions.Absalom was befriended
by Samuel Langhorne Clemens (or better
known as "Mark Twain" the famous writer
and humorist).They both were steamboat
pilots on the Mississippi River.Absalom's
father also was a steamboat pilot.
See "Roughing It" by Mark Twain and
"Absalom Grimes: Confederate Mail Runner" by Absalom Grimes.
Downing Hendren Glascock Sr.'s son,
Downing H. "Howard" Glascock Jr., was
also a steamboat pilot as was his son,
Louis Downing Glascock while living in
the South in the State of Louisiana. Downing Sr. also had a daughter, Lucinda
(Glascock) Penn who married Gabriel Penn
of Ralls County, Missouri who lived in the
State of Mississippi during the Civil War.

By the way,Mark Twain (Sam Clemens),
served as a Lt. in the Ralls County Rangers, a Confederate (local army).
He served under Asa Glascock and bought his horse/mule named "Paint Brush" from Harvey Glascock of Ralls County, Missouri. The Ralls Co Rangers
didn't see any action to speak of and they
disbanded not too long after they formed.

Ralls County, Missouri was known as
"Little Dixie" due to the numerous families
who settled there from states like Virginia
and Kentucky.
