Grimes in Lower Norfolk Co. Va. part 1
My nearby library has a very good Virginia genealogy section, so these
may be records, all from published record books, that many of your
readers will see for the first time .... except where noted UNVERIFIED.
Lower Norfolk was of course the parent of Norfolk, which was formed
from it in 1691.

Robert Grimes is said to have arrived in Norfolk [sic] Co VA on this
date.
“”When Robert Grimes I was born is not known, but he died in 1693 or
1694. His will was proved or probated in this year. Of his wife, no
record could be found. In his will he does not mention her; therefore
the assumption is that she predeceased him.””

Robert Grimes’ name appeared on a long list of payments received by the
estate of William Shipp
1648 Jun 15--LOWER NORFOLK CO VA court
John Harvey sold 400a on western branch of Elizabeth River to Cornelius
Lloyd in Nov 1640 or Nov 1641.Lloyd subsequently sold that land to
John Piper, Robert Bowers and Walter Grymes at an unknown date, and
that deed was recorded 15 Jun 1648.

land on a creek of Elizabeth River, adjoining land of Richard Jennings.

Jane Riglesworth, “widow relicte” of Peter Riglesworth, conveyed some
part or all of the land described in the record dated 15 June 1648

Robert Grimes was granted 300 acs at the head of the Westermost branch
of Elizabeth River, along land of Peter Rigglesworth &c
(This is no doubt in what was then Lower Norfolk Co and is now Norfolk
Co.)

Because Robert Grimes was a partner with Thos Lewes, dec’d, he is
ordered to take all of Lewes’ estate and pay its debts.
1652/53 Feb 16--LOWER NORFOLK CO VA court
Whereas Francis Emperor, attorney for Thomas Marsh, sued Robert Grimes
for 481 lb of tobacco, which suit Robert Grimes pleaded the “Act of
Assembly”.

Riglesworth, dec’d, said 300a having been patented to Robert Grimes.
1656 Apr 18--LOWER NORFOLK CO VA court at Elizabeth City
Upon the petition of Thos Buckmaster alleging that Christo: Rivers and
Robert Grimes “being together has kild of hogg of ye said Buckmaster,
it is therefore ordered yt ye sherr’f shall somon ye psonall appearance
of ye sd Rivers and Grimes at the next county court to be held at Mr
Edmunds to answer at what shall bee objected against them.”

1656 (evidently 1656/57) Jan 5--LOWER NORFOLK CO VA
Robert Grymes was granted 200 acs on the head of a creek, being a
branch of the W. branch of Elizabeth River, 150 acres of that total was
granted unto Henry Hooper 13 Aug 1640, who assigned same to Francis
Bright, who assigned to James Mathews, by whom it was assigned to Wm
Titcocke & Wm Bancroft, who assigned to sd Grymes, & the other 50 acres
for the transport of Arthur Dennis.
1658 Sep 15--LOWER NORFOLK CO VA court
Robt Grimes and Walker [sic] Grimes are on a list of headrights for
land granted to Coll: Edward Lloyd.
1658/59 Feb 15--LOWER NORFOLK CO VA court
An attachment is granted unto Robt Grimes ag’st Patrick Magrea’s estate
for 260 lbs of tobacco and caske.

MARY CAPPS was granted land at the head of W'most branch of Elizabeth
River, running along land of Peter Rigilsworth &c. to a reedy swamp &c.
This land was granted to Robt. Grymes 6 May 1652, assigned to Robert
Capps & due sd. Mary as daughter of said Capps.

Norfolk Co.

Thos Cottell was granted land on Western Branch of Elizabeth River,
adjoining his own land and land of Robert Grymes.

James Grimes, reputed son of Robert of the records above, is said to
have been born about this time.
“”His wife was named Mary, but her family or maiden name could not be
found.
The will of James Grimes I may be found in Brief Abstracts of Norfolk
County Wills, 1710-1763. On page 246 is the following: James Grimes I
of the Western Branch of the Elizabeth River, Norfolk County Virginia,
Book I, page 183, dated May 15, 1750; proved or probated 19 July 1750.””

to Robert Grimes 5 Jan 1656 and then assigned to Nicholas Chapman, who
assigned to Robert Allott, now due to John Allott as heir at law.

who was granted land in Lower Norfolk Co.
NOTE:
Cavaliers and Pioneers notes that the land granted to Woodhouse was in
Lower Norfolk Co at the time of the survey, but is “now” in Lynhaven
Parish of Princess Anne Co.
