Don't know if I'm in the right ballpark, but I'm suspicious.
My 3ggf Mercer GRIMES/GRAHAM (see my GenForum queries under both surnames) was born 1775 in VA.I find a group of GRIMES in Norfolk Co, VA throughout the 1700's, including (in 1761) an adult "Messer" or "Mercer"GRIMES, son of James, Sr.There are also a James, Jr.,Alexander, Charles, and Israel.
