Finally, the Ichabod Griggs mystery is solved and ALL of the books, the Barbour Collection, LDS files, etc, are wrong.
I'm not going to repeat all the research I've done on this, see my post just above that contains "The Saga of Ichabod Griggs".
We still have a mystery why Ichabod's grave marker states he died in 1764 but I'm working on that.
The vital records at Ashford state that Ichabod Griggs Junior died in 1755. So do the microfilm from the LDS Church, and so does the Barbour Collection, and the records at the state library at Hartford, Connecticut.
ALL of those family records for Ichabod show the birth of Ichabod Jr., followed by the death of Ichabod with quote marks stating he was the son of Ichabod and Lydia.
Those records that everyone was going by were REWRITTEN from the originals. I then called my contact at Ashford, CT and asked if she could get the original records out, as they even used those rewritten records. I explained why and said I thought there had been an error when they were rewritten.
She did this for me and told me on the phone what was there and how it read. I paid the $10.00 and waited to receive a certified copy of that record.
There are NO quote marks on the original. As I thought, there was an error made when these records were rewritten.
Only the name Ichabod Griggs, deceased, and the date of 1755 are on that line, the death date was for the father - Ichabod. His marker states he died at age 28. 1727 to 1755 is 28 years. It all fits.
I have yet to locate the burial place and a grave marker for Ichabod Jr. If anyone knows, I'd really appreciate knowing this. Thanks.
