Additional info on my Griggs family..... Thanks for the info. Do you know if I am confusing your John Griggs who came to NC in 1765 with the John Griggs I am thinking might be the one from Orange County, NC, (the John Griggs who left will 1765 in Bute County, NC). If this isn't your John Griggs he may be mine. If he is yours than I need not try tto trace this one. Thanks. John Griggs, possible father of Minus and John Griggs of Granville County, NC, resided in Orange County, VA, in 1735. He "MAY" be the John Griggs who was living in Northampton Co., NC, in 1744 when he witnessed a land deed with William Clanton. This John may be the John Griggs who left a will (mentioned in a book but I have never seen it) in 1765 in Bute County, NC. This is thought to possibly be the case because Bute County became a part of Warren County in 1779 and is very close to Granville County. There was a John Griggs (possibly son of above John Griggs) who entered 640 acres on the waters of Wild Creek Branch in Bute County, NC on April 8, 1778. In Granville County, NC, Leonard Griggs was listed there in 1754 in the muster roll of Granville County. He "MAY" be a brother to Minus as Minus possibly has a son named Leonard Griggs, as a person the right age to fit in with his family by that name travelled with some of Minus' other children to Kentucky and on to Missouri. Minus Griggs and his wife Jane were witnesses, along with John Garth, to a 1741 mortgage deed of Thomas Morgan in Orange County, VA. Minus is first mentioned in Granville County in 1751. Minus' son John Griggs moved from Granville County to Rowan County, NC, by 1776 and died there in 1778. His wife was Sarah Minor, who married after John's death to Andrew Hampton, who was grandson to the Captain Andrew Hampton that John's father served with in the 1754 Granville County militia. Minus daughter Jane married Ezekiel Hampton, who moved to Yancy County, NC, and another possible daughter was Elizabeth who married in 1775 in Granville County, NC, to Benjamin Peeler. Minus' son Minus moved to Rowan County, NC, and married Rachel Sparks. Around 1797 Minus moved to Clark County, KY, where he joined his eldest son, Clement Griggs, who had moved there in 1795. The numerous Griggs of Clark County are descended from Minus' sons. He died there in 1815-16. Some of Minus' sons (John, Samuel, Peyton, & possibly Leonard) moved west to Missouri before 1820 eventually settling in Montgomery & surrounding counties. Some later moved to Adams County, Illinois. Samuel, my ancestor, died in Pike County, Missouri. His daughter Mary Griggs married John Clanton and they moved west in 1853 to Yolo County, California. They are my 3rd great grandparents.
