I've had a problem with this for some time now. I was confused way back by the two different birth years of 1727 and 1737. Genealogies of Woodstock Families gives the 1737 date, Genealogy Of The Griggs Family gives the 1727 date. I can not locate any primary documents for his birth.
First, some common sense. His wife Lydia was born in 1728, nearer to 1727. His first born, Nathan, was born in 1749. Was Ichabod 12 at the time? I rather doubt it. Ashford vital records show marriage date for Ichabod and Lydia as 8 Sep 1748 and I also rather doubt he was married at age 11. Thus, my temporary acceptance of the 1727 birth year.
However, during a visit to the Old Cemetery in Eastford, CT in 2008, we washed his marker and it clearly stated "died at 28th year of age", thus, we are back at the 1737 birth year. (The actual inscription is "In memory of / Ichabod Griggs / He died Dec/ 23 1764 in ye / 28th year of / his age".
As his marker and Lydia's are next to each other, I can safely presume I have the correct Ichabod (There are many Ichabods in the Griggs line.
It is hard for me to believe he was married at age 11 with first child when he was only 12. However, unless the stone carver made an error carving his marker, what else can be believed?
Does anyone have further info about this, perhaps some primary information not usually reported in books etc? I'd also welcome your comments, pro or con.
