John R. Grigg, son of Rev. Jacob Grigg, graduated the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1820.Rev. Grigg was the minister of the Upper Dublin Baptist Church (Philadelphia) from December 7, 1815, to September 1, 1817.Rev. Grigg next served as minister for the New Market Street Baptist Church (later Fourth Baptist Church).
Most often, trained physicians serving in the military, including militia, are officers. In peacetime, promotions tend to be much slower.John Grigg was probably a member of a private militia in Pennsylvania, associated with one of Pennsylvania's state regiments.
Although I have no specific information about his militia service, you should check the Pennyslvania state archives. Also check for news articles contemporaneous with the presentation of the saber.I suspect that it was presented upon retirement from his regiment.
