William the immgrant - Origins

I have just been reviewing the DNA analysis of various Grigg families and I believe there are some positive signs as to where we may find the English origins of William Grigg the immigrant to Virginia in the 1660s.

At this stage I should point out I have no other knowledge on DNA sampling or interpretation apart from what is described at the site.

The site is at www.grigg.mygenerations.org and lists the DNA analysis of 23 current Grigg families.

The report suggests there is a good match with the Cornish families of St Dennis.

After reading the method of interpretation and then analysing the table I would argue that there is a far stronger correlation between the DNA samples from the three current branches of William the immigrant to Virginia and the samples of those listed below. In fact according to the method described in the article they reflect the closest of relationships.

- Thomas Griggs (1585-1646) who died in Suffolk Co, MA
- Clement Griggs, born Virginia, moved to South Carolina sometime between 1790 and 1800
- Alexander Griggs, b 1670, immigrant to New York, through son Alexander 2 and his son Abraham, b 1740
- Noah Gregg/Grigg/Griggs bc 1775, New Jersey, moved to Ohio and Indiana.

I do not know the English origins of the last three but if we accept the references on the internet to Thomas then he was born Dec 5 at Boxted, Suffolk, England, the son of John Griggs and his wife Martha.

The family, to some extent, is documented in J J Muskett, "Suffolk Manorial Families" but it does not include Thomas or his parents in the chart.

William's origins in Suffolk also (just) support the theory that "In mid-seventeenth century, Virginia's recruiting ground in England might have been encompassed by two great circles around the cities of London and Bristol, each with a radius of sixty miles. Ref: David Hackett Fischer, "Albion's Seed", p237.

I note that a DNA kit has been sent to a member of the family of Thomas but as yet has not been reported. I wait with anticipation for the results.

I would be delighted to hear from anyone who has the time to check my analysis, point out where I may have gone wrong and what are more appropriate conclusions.
