I took a look at the other GRIFFIN families on the same page in the 1860. The household immediately above J.J. and Caroline is:
Rody GRIFFIN age 63
Nancy E. age 28
Richard B. age 21

In the 1850 census in Nash county there's this family:
Benjn GRIFFIN age 51
Rhoda age 52
Robert age 21
Nancy E. age 18
Mary D. age 14
Jeremiah age 14
Richard age 11
John BRASWELL age 17

They are also on a page with other Griffins. I think it very likely that Jeremiah is your Jerry and his parents were Benjamin and Rhoda.
