Griese name change

This may seem like a dumb query to many of you, but I am grasping at straws. My GGrandmother's name was Caroline Engel, wife of Johann "John" Engel, and I had been told that her maiden name was Grau. On her death certificate it states that the information was given by her daughter. The daughter said that her mother's father's name was Ludwig Griese. This was quite a shock to me because I had always thought their name was Grau. Has anyone in this forum ever heard of the name Griese being changed to Grau?
My GGrandmother was born in Sellnow, Arnswalde (Brandenburg), Prussia on Sept. 24, 1843 or 1844 and was married abt 1866. She and my GGrandfather emigrated to the US on a sailing vessel in 1873. They had a very harrowing journey. They first went to Minnesota where they had Engel relatives, but soon went to Toledo, Ohio and eventually settled in Ottawa County, just east of Lucas County, where Toledo is located.
I know this is a very ambiguous query, but you never know when you will run across someone who has just the answer you need. Thank you.
