Richard [Henry] Grierson Christened on June 1st, 1817, son of [Benjamin] Henry Grierson & Ann[e] [nee Sheppard] Grierson, page 167. Note: Richard Henry Grierson is the son of Benjamin Henry Grierson, but was raised by Joshua Grierson, Benjamin's younger-brother. The reason for the switch was because Benjamin Henry Grierson married Ann Shepherd whilst pregnant with their child Richard Henry Grierson, who was actually christened on June 1st, 1817 - while Benjamin Henry Grierson & his wife, Anne Sheppard were recently married by April 13th, 1817, St. Catherine's Church, Dublin (shameful in those days). So then, Joshua Grierson raised Benjamin Henry Grierson's & Ann Sheppard's child, Richard. Joshua Grierson married in 1812 to RUTH (nee BRADLEY) Grierson and there is a listing in the Dublin marriage licenses for that marriage. He appears to have married secondly, c1815, ANNE (nee FLETCHER) Grierson, daughter of the (Reverend) Dr. Fletcher, Rector of St. Anne's, Dublin, son of the Very Reverend William Fletcher, D.C.L. (Oxon.) Dean of Kildare and Rector of St. Mary's, Dublin. She died (8) eight months after the birth of her only son; her husband died within a few years. Their only child was (says Greeves) Richard Henry Grierson, born c1816, described by his son [Reverend] Robert [B.] Grierson [b. c1843] as having been "ruined by his step-uncle and guardian." [Makes more sense now.] He was "educated by a family friend as a mechanical engineer" : was employed from February, 1860 as "Engine Keeper" for the new Graving Dock then under construction for the Dublin Port and Docks Board, later becoming foreman engineer of the Graving Dock and retiring in January, 1889 as foreman in charge of Workshops, at which time he received an augmented pension in view of his excellent service. He died at 99 Church Road, Dublin, 8th November, 1893, aged 77 years, and is buried in Mount Jerome Cemetery. By his wife, Jane, who died 16th July, 1886, and is buried in Mount Jerome Cemetery, they had six children:-- (1) Richard Grierson, died 27th October, 1856; buried in Mt. Jerome Cemetery, located in Harold's Cross, Dublin, Ireland. (2) [Reverend] Robert B. Grierson, born c1843; married August 31st, 1875, MARIA EVANS HOOPS, second daughter of the (Reverend) Samuel E. Hoops, D.D., Rector of Kiltubrid, Diocese of Ardagh. (3) Mary Grierson; died 3rd January, 1884; buried Mt. Jerome Cemetery, located in Harold's Cross, Dublin, Ireland. (4) Thomas Grierson, (Chief Engineer & Manager of the Manchester & Milford Railway) who resided in Aberystwith; (A) had a son Francis Grierson. (5) Anne Jane Grierson; died 18th April, 1930, buried in Mt. Jerome Cemetery, located in Harold's Cross, Dublin, Ireland. (6) [Reverend] Frederick John Grierson, b. c1859; died 30th April, 1930 and is buried in Mt. Jerome Cemetery, located in Harold's Cross, Dublin, Ireland. Lieut.-Colonel J. R. H. Greeves lists a Richard Henry Grierson, b. c1816, son of JOSHUA GRIERSON & his second wife, ANNE FLETCHER,. Joshua Grierson is listed as the son of John Grierson & Miss MARGARET CLARE daughter of Joshua Clare of Clairemont near Drogheda, Province of Leinster - Drogheda, Ireland which is north of Navan and Navan is about 12 miles north of Trim Castle in Co. Meath, Ireland. John Grierson was the eldest son of Robert Grierson of Smithfield Street, Dublin, Ireland. Sources: (1) St. Catherine's Church, Dublin (c1750-c1842; marriages, burials.
