Carl Joseph Grierson age 87 a resident of Portland Texas, passed away Friday, December 18, 2009. He was born in Mobile, Alabama on September 22, 1922 to Carl Harold Grierson and Mary Bertha Pickich.
Junior as he was called, grew up in Biloxi, Mississippi and later in Beaumont, Texas where he graduated from Beaumont High School.
He enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1942. He was a glider mechanic and qualified marksman. He participated in seven campaigns receiving several ribbons and decorations including Distinguished Unit Badge, EAME Campaign Ribbon with 7 bronze stars, Good Conduct Medal and Overseas Service Bars. He was with the 452d Squadron and in the first wave of gliders on D-Day.
He was an ironworker and later a draftsman for DuPont. He worked for Brown & Root Ingleside as a purchasing agent until his retirement in 1985.
Carl is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Beverly Ann Grierson and Rosemary Grierson Woodall.
He is survived by his wife Billie Jean of Portland and his children, Johnnie Sue (Kenneth) Hayes, James Allen (Carolyn) Brown, Juliann (Spencer) Bassett, Charlotte Ann Gallier, Betty Jean (Bill) Weed, Patricia Ann Perez, Cynthia Faith (Jimmy) Ray, Steven Linn (Rhonda) Brown. Nephews Wade Joseph Woodall and Carl Dennis Woodall; 19 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons: Drew Perez, Jarrod Brown, Robert Hayes, Matthew Ray, and Joshua Ray.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at the Limbaugh Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at the San Patricio Memorial Gardens.
