Updated Grierson Baronets of Lag by D. Grierson (c) Dec. 2009
XI. (Chief) Malcolm (styled Dominus de MacGregor), a person of great loyalty, strongly attached to (King) Robert de Bruce. Malcolm fought at the battle of Bannockburn, and was known by the name of “Morfhear bachdach,” or the lame lord.
The 24 Grierson Chiefs of the line, do not take into consideration, the MacGregor Chiefs of Old.
A list of recognized Grierson variations : -
Greirson, Grearson, Greerson, Greierson, Grier, Greir, Grear, Greear, Greer, Griere, Griery, Greery, McGreer, McGrier, McGreery, McGriery, O'Greer, de Grier.
It is now surmized, & has been suggested for some time that there is a link missing between Malcolm MacGregor, the lame lord, & Gilbert Grierson, 1st Lord of Lag. Some historians are now asserting that this missing link is found in the Lag charters, as Duncan, father of Gilbert Grerson, dated 1351 - I do not disagree with this assertion.
Malcolm MacGregor, 11th feu. Lord of MacGregor & his wife, Mary MacAlpine had issue, daughters unrecorded, & two sons, viz.:
-- (1st Chief of Clan Grierson) was Gilbert (MacGregor, or Gregorson) Grierson, 1st feu. Lord of Lag was baptised in 1353 ; Gilbert Grierson is recorded to have married Janet Glendinning, dau. of (Sir) Simon Glendinning of Parton & his wife, (Lady) Mary Douglas, before 1400.
-- (2) Gregor (Aulin) Grierson, his heir & daughters who are not recorded.
(1st Chief) Gilbert Grierson, 1st feu. Lord of Lag, died after 9th April, 1425, was buried at Old Dunscore Kirkyard, Dumfries-shire, Scotland. In 1400 he was granted the lands of Airde, Tyrcome, Overholm, Netherholm & Dalgarnock by charter from the 9th Earl of Dunbar, & at this time, he Englished his surname from the Gaelic: MacGregor to the Englished surname of : Grierson. On 6th December, 1408 he was granted the lands of Lag by Henry, 2nd Earl of Orkney, in exchange for an annual gift of a pair of gold spurs to be given to the Earl at Dumfries Castle, blench-firm: as feudal tenure. In 1410 he was granted the lands of Drumjoan by Archibald, 4th Earl of Douglas [S., 1357/8].

He was the last Provincial of the Dominicans, Black Friars, St. Andrews', Scotland. "First should be that of John Grierson, who succeeded Adamson as Provincial in 1523 and was still in office in 1560. His length of time in office was unconstitutional, unless exceptional tenure was covered by dispensation. (9th Chief) (Sir) William Grierson, 9th feudal Lord of Lag, was born into a horrid time, whenever he would forced to distance himself, & his family, by shortening his Englished surname of Grierson (Gaelic = MacGregor) to Grier & Greir. These were turbulent times for all men, prior to the Proscription & for many decades afterwards.
The Legally sanctioned Proscription & Persecution of Clan Gregor : 'The wicked & unhappie race of Clan Gregour, quha sa lang hes continewit in bluid, thrift, reif, & oppressioun' (vol. ix. p. xxxiv.) In 1603--the very year of James' accession to the throne of England--an Act of the Scottish Council was passed, 'proscribing the Clan utterly, & decreeing, under pain of death, the disuse of the very name Macgregor by all persons of the clan' (vol. vi. p. 558 n. & Introd. p. Iv.). "The first fruits of Proscription was the Execution of A. Macgregor of Glenstrae, the Chief of the Clan, & 11 of his principal kinsmen & retainers. (Register between the years of 1610-1613) 'a war of absolute extermination against the Macgregors, root & branch' commenced (vol. ix. p. xxxv.).

A contract of marriage was entered into at Mouswald on 26th June, 1654 between William Grierson, [Laird] of Barrowharr (Barquhar), younger brother of (11th Chief) (Sir) John Grierson of Lag (b. c1623 ; died 26th February, 1658), Knight, & MARGARET DOUGLAS, born 1633 (eldest daughter) of James Douglas of Mouswald. [Margaret Grierson, sister of Robert Grierson of Lag and spouse of Archibald STEWART of SHAMBELLIE - 8[th] September 1677],
-- (C) (13th Chief) (Sir) Robert Grierson, of Lag, "Auld Lag", (1st or eldest surviving son of William, Laird of Barquhar), 1st Baronet of Lag, born 1657; died 29th December, 1733; married Henrietta Douglas, sister germain of William Douglas, the Earl of Queensberry.
Transcribed from the Project ebook of Claverhouse by Mowbray Morris, (1887), pp. 21/2 -- (Sir) Robert Grierson of Lag was regarded in his own district with an energy of hatred to which even the terror inspired by Claverhouse gave place, & which has survived to a time within the memory of men still living...(as in the traditional style of the day he was more commonly called) in Scott's own lifetime: the fatal horse-shoe, the birth-mark of all the Redgauntlet line, was believed to be conspicuous on the foreheads of every "true Grierson" in moments of anger.
His father, William Greirson, September 22nd, 1693 - CC5/6/7, of BARRWHARR, brother-german to umquhile, (Sir) JOHN GREIRSON of LAGG - [Father of (Sir) Robert GRIERSON of Lag, "Auld Lag".] - (Dumfries Sheriff Court Deeds, Warrants ~ SC15/58/5 ~ October, 1734 - Assignation ~ (Sir) William Grierson, of Lag to (Lady) Henrietta Douglas ~ this involves the use of the liferent lands - marriage contract made between her & (William's father), (Sir) Robert Grierson, of Lag dated 21st September, 1676 ~ she is described as sister germain of William Douglas, Earl of Queensberry.)
(Sir) Robert Grierson of Lag was served heir on 9th April, 1669. (Chief) (Sir) Robert Grierson, 1st Baronet of Lag, was born in the year 1657 ; he died on the 29th day of December, 1733, was buried on the 31st day of December, 1733 in Dunscore Churchyard.
He married (Lady) Henrietta Douglas (styled Lady Lagg) who is reported to have died at the TurnPike House in 1736 with other dates of death ; it is said that "her portrait might be found at Drumlanrig?" (Sir) Robert Grierson, 1st Baronet of Lag was the son of William Grierson, born c1626; who died after 6th December, 1665, of the farm & Laird of Barquhar, Kirkcudbright, Scotland, & his wife, Margaret Douglas, born c1633, the daughter of (Sir) James Douglas, of Mouswald, Dumfries, Scotland. William Grierson Laird of Barquhar, was the older brother of James Grierson, born c1630, of Larglanglie, thus the connection to Larbreck.

(Lady) Henrietta Douglas, born c1660; died 1736; marriage contract was made between her & Robert Grierson of Lag, dated the 21st day of September, 1676 - they were married about October, 1676. Robert Grierson was then 19 years of age, she must have been very young - she is described as sister germain of William Douglas, Earl of Queensberry.)
-- (13th Chief) (Sir) Robert Grierson of Lag & his wife, (Lady) Henrietta Douglas, had at least, issue six legitimate children known, [& at the very least, two illegitimate children for Robert], viz.:
-- [1] (14th Chief) (Sir) William Grierson, 2nd Baronet of Lag, (1st son) born c1677, Rockall [sic], Annary, Scotland. (Sir) William Grierson died in 1760, d.s.p.; having married to (Dame) Anne Musgrave, born July 4th, 1676, Washington, Durham County, England, was christened on July 4th, 1676, Washington, Durham County, England; marriage date was September 1st, 1720 in Aspartria, Cumberland, England. She was the (3rd) daughter of (Sir) Richard Musgrave, 2nd Baronet, of Hayton & Dorothy James. She died "At Rockhall, December 17th, 1749" (Scots' Magazine). He was captured & taken prisoner with his younger brother, Gilbert, at the 1st Jacobite Rebellion (The London Gazette, November 26th, 1715).] Dumfries Court Commissary Wills - 28[th] January 1761 - William Grierson of Lagg (sic) - testament testamentar - he is the eldest son of the deceased Sir Robert Grierson of Lagg (sic) - died 1760 - his sole executor is Robert Cutler, merchant in Dumfries - there are [five] 5 pages of his possessions, furniture, etc. - 19[th] February 1765 - this merely confirms the above. (Sir) William Grierson, left at least two (2) illigitimate children that I know of, by two different women.
The illigitimate children of William Grierson (aka Grier) of Lag, & Margaret Rankin, & 'a wench.'
...(A) unknown child with Margaret Rankin, b. c1714,
...(B) unknown child by "a wench" c18th July, 1717 - ['the wench' is probably a prostitute, un-named here' - (Sir) William was released from Newgate Prison on the 18th of July, 1717, only to be immediately taken up by the officers of St. Andrew's, Holborn 'to give security' for getting a wench with child, while in prison.' (source - The House of Commons, 1690-1715, by David Hayton).
One of William Grierson's brothers trained as a lawyer [Gilbert], while another attended for 2 years, the Scots' College at Douai, France [James]. William Grierson dictated letters because "he was no hand with the pen." William Grierson was an Episcopalian & a Jacobite sympathizer.
In 1713, (Sir) Robert Grierson, 1st Baronet turned over the family estates in return for a life rent, with a provision that property might still be sold to pay off debts. William Grierson's marriage which had taken place on September 1st, 1720, (His marriage contract with Anne Musgrave is dated 8-12 August, 1720) was apparently influenced by financial considerations.
Although his wife brought a 'good fortune' she was already in her mid-forties and unable to provide him with any children to inherit the estate. The tendancy of the family to fight shy of any overt connexion with the Jacobite cause had been signalled many years earlier by his brother, John Grierson, who expressed concern that any agitation on his part to alleviate the sufferings of the exiles in Holland might bring 'reproach upon the family.'
Willliam Grierson died in 1760, succeeded by his nephew, Robert Grierson, to baronetcy, but not the estates, who had previously been removed from the series of heirs after a dispute with (Sir) William Grierson & the elder (Sir) Robert Grierson, 1st Baronet. (Chief) (Sir) William Grierson, 2nd Baronet of Lag''', died without legitimate heir, (d. 1760), s.p., was captured with his younger brother, Gilbert at the 1st Jacobite Rebellion of 1715 (The London Gazette ~ Whitehall, November 28th, 1715 ~ A List of the Prisoners taken at Preston.)
(13th Chief) (Sir) Robert Grierson, 1st Baronet, (Laird of Lag) & his wife, (Lady) Henrietta Douglas, had at least, issue six, viz.: (continued through seven & eight, counting 2 illigetimate children for Robert known).
-- [2] James Grierson, of Capenoch, born c1679, (2nd Son), (he died April, 1721 according to his Will, on file) & who married ELIZABETH FERGUSON before 1705. (In 1886, Lt.-Col. Alex. Fergusson states there is a tombstone of James Grierson of Capenoch, perhaps the son of "Auld Lag" but, none to mark his grave (Auld Lag's grave). This stone must now be gone (2009), so it is now believed that James Grierson, 2nd son was buried in the burial plot, rather large as it is, with his father, Sir Robert, 1st Baronet, at Dunscore Kirkyard ; I would assume that his wife, is buried with him. In 1715 JAMES GRIERSON was involved in the 1715 Jacobite Uprising, & was imprisoned for "counterfeiting the coin & for forgeing stamps on paper (source of connection to the estate of Capenoch, dated July 6th, 1704, Edinburgh Parliamentary Register for Saturday, August 5th, 1704, Legislation). It was James, according to (Col.) Alex. Fergusson that spent two years (1698-1700) at Scots' College in Douay (Douai). [The Presbytery of Lochmaben reported in 1705 "James Grierson their 2nd son now living with his wife at Laghall [aka LAG] in Troqueer parish beside Dumfries have been suspect of having apostatized from the Protestant to the Popish religion severall years ago. His Lady [Elizabeth] Ferguson daughter to Isle Ferguson is a Protestant ; [but surmise that he meant (Ferguson of Isle)."

James Grierson or Greir (d. April, 1721), according to his Will, married Elizabeth Ferguson, & had issue known, five, viz.:
--- (A) (15th Chief) (Sir) Robert Grierson, 3rd BARONET of Lag''', born c1700 ; died in 1764, (d.s.p.) - "Their son, ROBERT GRIERSON, already mentioned, in some way incurred the displeasure of old Lag & of William his uncle.....He was expressly cut off from succeeding to the family estates. This was done by a 4th deed which Lag executed a few days before his death, namely on the 20th December, 1733. In it (Sir) Robert's name is removed from the series of heirs. It was to no avail that on his uncle's death, he 'took out breaves' and had himself served heir to the estates ; but he could not be excluded from succession to the family title, and he became 3rd Baronet of Lag in 1760, on William's death. So far as I am aware, no mention of him is made in the ordinary books of the Baronetcy," (Alexander Fergusson's Laird of Lag, 1886)

He was served Heir to his brother, William Grierson (2nd Baronet) on 24th November, 1760. He was a student at the Grammar School in Penpont Parish in 1705 (would have been admitted by age 12 through age 15, I believe). Elizabeth Maitland was the daughter of (Colonel) Robert Maitland and Elizabeth Bell. She married (Sir) Gilbert Grierson of Lag, 4th Baronet, on marriage date 25th November, 1737 at Dalkeith, Mid-lothian, Scotland. She died on 8th April 1788 at Dumfries, Dumfries-shire, Scotland. The two arbiters ~ writers in Edinburgh decide that Katherine Carlyle is due £20 of yearly annuity by representatives of John Grierson who by his Testament Destination left this to her (Obviously, Gilbert Grierson had been remiss in not paying this to her). A curious entry, makes me realize that the 3rd Baronet died before 1765, whenever, little being known of him, is recorded to have died in 1765, but apparently he died about 1764, taken from the Records of the Duke of Buccleuch - [ 652 ] GD224/452/5 Sir Gilbert Grierson's accounts, crop 1764. A (Post-Nuptual Contract) for the marriage between (Sir) Robert Grierson of Lag, 5th Baronet & Margaret Dalzell was signed on the 18th October, 1777 at Dumfries-shire, Scotland, but recorded 17th March, 1783. He was buried on th 15th of August, 1839 at Mouswald Churchyard, Mouswald, Dumfries-shire, Scotland in the Grierson Mausoleum. His will was probated in July, 1842. MARGARET DALZIEL (DALZELL), born January 31st, 1757.
(17th Sir) Robert Grierson of Lag, 5th Baronet was commissioned with the rank of Ensign, in the service of the 6th Foot. He gained the rank of Lieutenant on the 10th October, 1761 in the service of the 11th Foot. He retired from military service in the year 1763. He succeeded to the title of 5th Baronet Grierson, of Lag, co. Dumfries [N.S., 1685] on 7th February, 1766, upon the death of his father, (Sir) Gilbert Grierson.
"Sir Robert Grierson, Bart., August 8th, [1839]. At Rockhall, Dumfries-shire, Sir Robert Grierson, the fourth [sic] Baronet, of Lag, co. Dumfries (1685); a Lieutenant on half pay of the 11th foot."
"The age of this truly venerable and remarkable man has long been variously computed ; parish registers were badly kept a century ago and, fond as ancients usually are of reverting to the days of other years, the deceased was so modestly peculiar in this and some other matters, that he shunned rather than obtruded the subject. At the death of his near relative and intimate friend, the late Marquis of Queensberry, he remarked to the family surgeon, "He was an old man, sir;" and, when the doctor demurred to his opinion, added, "he was the same age as my eldest son" (now Sir Alexander Grierson), without making any nearer allusion to his own partriarchal standing."
"In 1807, that is thirty-two years ago, his name headed the freeholders of Dumfriesshire, a circumstance in itself very remarkable, and which in the opinion of the sheriff clerk of the county is altogether unprecedented. That he was above a hundred may be considered certain, and popular opinion is obstinate in asserting that he had entered his 106th year. Although very temperate himself, he dispensed a generous hospitality, was fond of excercise in the open air, excelled in all sporting and athletic arts, and perhaps trod the moors consecutively for a longer period than any other man of rank and fortune that ever existed. His constitution was remarkably sound and vigorous; to sickness he was a stranger; never was confined to bed a single day, and only a few hours preceding his death talked of taking [begin page 423] his usual carriage drive.
Singularly gifted in regard to health, he appeared equally exempt from the pangs of dissolution, "dropping like a pear grown fully ripe," and slept rather than struggled away. His contemporaries in "life's morning march" had all gone down to the grave before him ; and hundreds who had emigrated to all parts of the world were astonished on their return--some at the distance of an ordinary life time--to find Sir Robert Grierson not merely alive, but mentally and bodily firm and erect, as one who had discovered the elixir vitae.
In 1766 the deceased entered to the entailed estate of Rockhall, on the demise of his father, Sir Gilbert, a younger son of the well-known Grierson of Lag, (the first Baronet who married Lady Henrietta Douglas, daughter of James second Earl of Queensberry). Previous to this event he had become a soldier, served a year as ensign in the 6th, or Blackcuffs, and five years in the 11th. His commission in the latter regiment is dated 10th October, 1761, and he actually drew half-pay for the extraordinary period of 76 years. Part of his military life was spent abroad, and he was present at Gibraltar when a feu de joie was fired in honour of the birth of George IV. With other parts of the continent of Europe he was also acquainted, and the writer of this imperfect sketch once heard him talk of ascending Mount Vesuvius, the apex of which he described as so steep that the guides found it necessary to go a little way before, and assist strangers up by means of ropes."
"During the troubles of 1794, government resolving to name lords-lieutenant of counties, and raise over the country fencible regiments, William, the last Duke of Queensberry, as Lord Lieutenant of Dumfries-shire, enrolled a cavalry corps, the command of which was offered to Sir Robert Grierson ; and although he declined that honour, he accepted the office of senior captain. Volunteer corps came next into fashion, and the deceased again evinced his zeal for the public service by recruiting and excellent company from the ranks of his own tenants and neighbours, in Mousewald [sic] and Torthorwald ; and when these merged into local militia, he accepted the rank of major, an office he held until the force was disembodied. He was thus much of a military man drew half pay, as has been stated, for more than twice the average term of human life, and was the oldest officer in the service a good many years previous to his death."
"In other respects he mingled little in public business, took no prominnent share in politics, avoided revelry and ostentation, managed with discretion the affairs of his estate, was of easy access, and lived beloved and respected by all, near or at a distance, whether of his own or inferior rank, down to the humblest of his tradesmen and servants.
The remains of this "good old country gentleman" were interred in Mousewald [sic] churchyard on the 15th August, in presence of about 300 mourners. The tenantry having specially requested that a hearse might be dispensed with, the coffin was borne by willing arms the distance of more than two miles. The procession, consisting of more than 150 pedestrians, about 30 carriages, and a good many horsemen, covered a half a mile of road, and was witnessed by hundreds on its passage. Matrons and maids, grandsires ["an aged man (archaic), grandfather, forefather"] and children, were seem stationed on sunny knolls--the old to obtain a last lingering look of the remains of one they had respected so long, and seen so often --and the young that they might epoch in their several lives that they had gazed on the funeral of old Sir Robert Grierson.
Prayers were said at the Mansion House [Rockhall] by the minister of the parish, and the Rev. Dr. Wallace ; and the beautiful funeral service of the church of England was impressively read in the grave yard and famly aile [sic - aisle] [the side of a church nave separated by piers from the nave proper] by the Rev. Charles Babington. The company then slowly dispersed, and the sentiment was general --"take him for all in all, we ne'er shall look upon his like again." About 200 beggars attended at the office-houses, and it was understood that some of them had travelled distances of 10 or 15 miles to obtain the customary dole when a baron dies. Nearly 100 females of all ages clustured [sic] under a huge beech tree, and their appearance, which was not a little singular, must have reminded many of Sir Walter Scott's description of a similar scene in the "Bride of Lammermoor."
(Sir) Robert Grierson married, in 1778, (Lady) Margaret Dalzell, (eldest daughter) of Alexander, who, but for the attainder, would have been 7th Earl of Carnwath, and cousin to the late Earl. His good lady died many years ago, having had issue four sons and six daughters ; of whom the eldest, now Sir Alexander Grierson, married his cousin-german [sic] Elizabeth, daughter of Richard (styled) Lord Dalzell."
