Since the 1880 census shows John as born in Philadelphia it helps to narrow down the possibilities. The 1870 census shows a John and Sophia Grier living in Philadelphia but they would have been married too early for your couple. The 1860 census shows a John Grier 12 living with Samuel and Jane in Philadelphia. Both were born in Ireland, but that doesn't mean they are the right ones either.

I suggest getting John and Sophia's death certificates from the PA Div. of Vital Records. Check with the Lycoming county Genealogical Society for their obits. Since you have the years of death it shouldn't be too hard. You might check with the cemetery they are buried in to see if they have anything.
