Sources: (1) Herald & Torch Light, The (Hagerstown, Maryland) dated June 23rd, 1880: -- WILLIAM ALEXANDER MONTGOMERY GRIER, of Hazelton is the name of the Pennsylvania delegate who nominated (General) Garfield & voted steadily fro him until on the 35th ballot his single vote was re-inforced by Wisconsin & Indiana. The Eastern Express says that he is a graduate of Lafayette College, Class of 1856. He was born in Danville, - December 9th, 1833, and has been a banker all his life, and a member of the firm of Pardee, Markle & Grier since 1867. Since 1873 he has been, by appointment of (Governor) Hartranft, a Trustee fo the state hospital for the Insane, at Danville. The Chicago Inter-Ocean says that Mr. Grier feels very proud of having been the first, and for a long time the only man to vote for Garfield, & remarked last evening that the people that laughed at him for casting his solitary vote for thirty-three [sic] ballots are now complimenting him for his sagacity and foresight. M. Grier stated that he has no personal acquaintance with (General) Garfield, but he has long admired him as an ideal statesman, and he is very glad that he nominated--gladder, he remarked, than any man in America. When asked what office he expected to have under the next administration, he said: "I want no office, but I do want (General) Garfield to write me a letter I can hand down to my children's children, to show them what I did at the Chicago Convention."
