A few years ago my father sent me an article concerning this subject. I will try to remember what it said. When the Conquistadores came to the New World, the make up of the explores were not exclusive Spanards. Some were from Italy, France and Greece and other countries. Since the names of the Greeks were difficult to pronounce and to make it easier to call them they were called by their Spanish translation of Greek (GRIEGO). Has this been any help?
