My paternal great grandmother was Anetta M. 'Annie' Gridley. She married my great grandfather Reverend M.E. Fletcher in Yarmouth in 1893.
Her father William H. Gridley was born in 1820 (USA?), and died in Yarmouth in 1897.
He was from the Richard Gridley line that came to Boston from England in 1630;three brothers Richard, Samuel and Thomas.
I haven't researched the actual family tree/genealogy to a great extent yet, but do have a wonderful old book published in 1877 containing historical information and an inscription dated: Canton 1881. A wax stamp bearing the Gridley coat of arms is on the back page, and old photo plates are tucked in with notes.
The Gridley Coat of Arms was also grouped with the book, motto being: 'Devant si je puis', loosely translated, 'Ahead if I can.'
Descendants that I'm aware of are mostly women, and mostly living in BC.
I'd be interested in hearing more about your Canadian connection too.
Best regards,
Diane
