Dear Corine- I've been studying your Thomas a little. I wanted to know who he was-especially since he named Candor. He, his wife Sally, and daughter Nancy are buried at the front right section of Maple Grove Cemetary. He probably came to Candor around 1803 when Selah's family came (but it could have been slightly before/after?). Thomas and Selah were first cousins. Thomas' father was Ebenezer Gridley, b.12/16/1712 and his mother was Azubah Orvis.
Tioga Gazateer, p.169: In 1806 Captain Hart and Thomas Gridley built a saw-mill, farther up the creek, and lumber was soon plenty enough to give every log house a floor. These primitive log cabins were covered with a bark roof, supported by poles. Not unfrequently a large section of bark served as a door, and oiled paper admitted some light at the window. A few stones served as a fire-place, and an opening in the roof above them let out the smoke, and let in the daylight.

Tioga Gazateer: "At a town meeting March 5, 1811, Thomas Gridley, familiarly known as "Squire Hemlock," had delegated to him the privilege of naming the new town. Why the name Candor was chosen is a matter of conjecture." (Cana is an Indian word that means bend in the valley; perhaps Thomas used part of the Indian word?)

I've studied your family branch some and have quite a few names... Urania, daughter of Thomas, born 12/27/1795?

There are many more places to do research yet. I'm sorry this is all I can give you for now. Would like to know more about your tree branch.
Best regards!
