Well, carly, cuz...
The best I have been able to come up with is that it means "dweller in grida's wood"...a forested area in merrye olde englande.
A Robert De Gredley fought at the battle of Hastings and the De Gredleys were barone of Manchester for many many years.
That's about all I know.
