The Grice community in western Upshur County, Texas was orininally known as Hammel's Chapel. John Jackson Grice moved there with his daughter and son-in-law, Sarah Lucinda and Eli Jackson Tucker in the 1880s and built a store. Later, he was named Postmaster of a post office which was established in his store and was called "Grice". After the post office was closed, the name, Grice, remained as the name of the community.
John Grice's wife, Lucinda Johnston Grice is buried in the Grice cemetery beside her youngest daughter and son-in-law, Rosa and Uriah Taylor Tucker, brother of Eli. John Grice was born in Meriwether County, GA, served in the Confederate army while living in Chambers County, AL, and came to Wood County, Texas about 1867 with his father, William W. Grice, and family.
John Grice died in Oklahoma in 1907 while visiting his a son and daughter and is buried there. He has many descendants living in Upshur County and Wood County, but, to my knowledge, no one named Grice. One grandson lives in Dallas. John Grice's daughter, Sarah Lucinda, born 4 July 1861, is my grandmother and the Tucker family still has a reunion the first Sunday of July in honor of her birthday. The reunion has been held anually since 1921-2.
