Greve's from Schleswig-Holstein
My grandfather told my mom that our Greve's were from Holstein, Germany in Schleswig-Holstein.Now that borders have moved it's hard to say where that was/is.He told her once that he didn't like to speak German because it was more of a gutteral German/lower German and that it embarrased him.
My grandfather was John Paul Greve, b.1898 in Jefferson Township, Shelby Co., Iowa. His father was John Greve b. 1872 in Teeds Grove, Clinton Co., IA and his mother was Dora Wiese b. 1875 in Marne, Cass Co., IA.John was one of three brothers (the others being Ernest and Henry).John, Ernest and Henry's parents were Peter Greve and Doris Krouger (I've seen this one spelled a variety of ways). On the 1900 census records I have for John Greve list his parents as both being born in Germany but here is where my trail stops cold.I've heard there is a Claus Greve back in the line and that the Greve Gasthaus in Schlewig-Holstein used to be in this line of the family.I did write them and they wrote me back in German (I'm still working on that).
Just in case someone is in the family at a different angle, my grandfather John Paul had many many siblings:
Ernest P. Greve (mother was Lizzie Ronfeldt)
Mamie Greve (mother was a Lizzie Ronfeldt)
John Paul Greve
Leona Greve (Shnirl)
Anne Greve
Emma Greve (Mandery)
Ella Greve
Edna Greve (Dewey)
Herbert F. (Ethel Christofferson)
Harold Greve (Faye Fritch)
Irene Greve (Carlson)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
~Chris
