FRIENDS OF LAG TOWER
21st April, 2007, Saturday ~
Hi David.
Just to let you know that I met yesterday with (Judge) William Crawford & Fiona McCulloch, my fellow board members of the Lag Tower Preservation Trust, Limited.
We hope in a few days time to (buy the Tower) for a nominal [fee of] £1.00 from its owner, (a farmer called David Matthews). There are however a few property transfer matters to resolve about the rights of the public to have proper access.
Also present was an architect who specialises in historic buildings called (Anthony Wolfe). He is to prepare a report for the building work which is needed for submission to potential funding bodies such as Historic Scotland and the Solway Tust.
A big problem will be to decide how best to remove the many trees which are growing inside the tower as their roots are intertwined with the stones and if they are killed & then shrink there will be a danger of collapsing walls.
In due course we also plan to establish a body called (Friends of Lag Tower) for which Griersons around the world may contribute as there will be ongoing maintenance costs as well as a balance of repair costs. I will keep you posted on this as your web site could be a very valuable contact vehicle.
Best wishes.
Philip H.-Grierson.
