Greif/Frenkel in Ukraine and Wien
Isak Greif was born in Kolomea (Kolomyya) Ukraine (formerly Poland and A-H) October 20, 1883, and moved to Chernovtsy, and later Vienna, as a young man. He married Mina Lewin of Chernovtsy. Isak perished in Buchenwald in 1940.Isak was one of thirteen children of "Wolf" Greif and Chaje Frenkel of Kolomea, born 1850 and 1853. This family is Jewish. Their religious wedding was not recognized by the state and children were registered under the mother's surname, as if illegitimate. Isak changed his name to Greif legally as an adult. We are interested in hearing from anyone with Greif or Frenkel relatives originally from this area. Isak had sisters named Clara and Sophie, and another who married an Israel Katz and settled in Vienna. One of their children, David Katz, became a Rabbi in Montreal.
