Merrie, I believe I found Jesse in 1840 census. 1850 MERRIMAC, CRAWFORD, MO GREGORY Jesse Males: 1 aged 5-10, 1 aged 30-40 Females: 1 aged under 5, 1 aged 30-40 there is also a Benjamin Gregory on same page - perhaps a brother of Jesse? Benjamin Males: 1 under age 5, 1 aged 10-15, 1 aged 20-30 Females; 1 aged under 5, 1 aged 20-30 So it looks like Jesse was in Crawford Co. in 1840 and 1860 so should be there in 1850 as well. I have not found the family though. I tried looking using just first names as well as using last name only and years of birth. It also looks like Jesse had a son who does not show up in 1860 census with the family. I found Benjamin in 1850 and he is 36 so right age to be a brother to Jesse. One problem with the 1850 census for Crawford Co. is that the enumerator seems to have listed almost all by initials rather than first names - there are some families where he has used all of their first names but many more where there are only initials as is the case with Benjamin's family. He is only one who has his name shown. I checked their listing to see if by some chance Jesse and family were with Benjamin but they are not. Well, looks like I may have found them - not absolutely sure but initials seem to match. If so, the name looks like Gregley rather than Gregory in the image. I looked in index and they are indexed as GRIGLEY J. age 40, male, farmer born MO N. age 40 , female, born TN - cannot read and write J.C. age 16, male, born MO N.E. age 12, female, born MO T. age 8, born MO I. age 6, born MO The initials seem to match with names from 1860. J for Jessee, N for Nancy, J.C. likely the son shown in 1840, N.E. for Nancy, T, for Thomas, and I for Isac They are listed on page 82 in the 185 census for District 24, Crawford, MO It sure would have helped if they had put first names down.
