"Greg has it's origin and devises it's name from Clan MacGregor of Scotland, which claims descent from King Kenneth McAlpine II, 1st king of Scotland, whose son received the name Gregory II. In 1603 an edict was issued by James VI, against Clan Gregor, and in 1633 another by Chas. I, denouncing the whole clan, and forbidding anyone from carrying or being baptized by that name. In consequence of this a complete dispersion took placed, and different members of the Clan adopted the names of Campbell, Gregory, Grieg, etc. "
