Looking for information on one Laura E. Greenlaw (born about 1864 in Pembroke, Me; 16 in 1880 living with her grandfather Hatevil Leighton) and what happened to her. Mary J. Leighton (born March 4, 1835 in Pembroke, Me; died between 1870-1880 in Maine) married one James Greenlaw and had children:
1) Martha Jane Greenlaw- born Aug. 1861 in Maine
2) Laura E. Greenlaw- born about 1864 in Maine
According to Percy Leighton who wrote "Leighton Genealogies" James Greenlaw was born in England, married Mary and then deserted her. This said James Greenlaw was a mining engr or something like that. Percy Leighton referred to a Census entry of 1860 and a 24 yr old James Greenlaw in Kossuth, Maine living with a 16 yr old Lucy. What Percy missed was that James Greenlaw was born in Maine. I have determined this latter James was the son of Polly Smith and William C. Greenlaw who disappeared from the area after 1850. If that is the James Greenlaw that married Mary J. Leighton he was not from England.
I have traced Martha who married Leander Ashby and had many children and a large descendancy. Her sister Laura E. was 16 yrs old and living with her grandfather Hatevil Leighton in 1880 Pembroke, Me. Laura was single at the time. That is the last info I can find on her. Mary J. Leighton Greenlaws brother Hatevil adopted a girl Lilla M. Greenlaw (also known as Lilla M. Leighton)(born March 21, 1883; died 1969 in Pembroke, Maine) and married John B. Mahar on Dec. 7, 1901 having one known child John Russell Mahar born Aug. 25, 1910; died Jan. 9, 1993 in Woodland, Maine. I wonder if Lilla had something to do with Laura E, Hatevils niece. In any case, does anyone know what happened to Laura E. Greenlaw?
