Per Rusty Greenland, 5/1/00

The Greenlands most likely originated in Hampshire, around the communities of Hythe and Romney. About 10 years ago on a trip there found lot's of Greenland's - tombstones, church and court records. The kind people of Hythe were accustomed to getting visits from inquires from Greenland's from all over the English speaking world, especially Austrialia, US and Canada.

That part of England (Hampshire) was taken over by the Celtic population by theJutes, the northern neighbors of the Angles and the Saxons, from what is today Schlewig-Holstein Germany - taken from Denmark duringthe chancellorship of Otto Bismark.

The Name Greenland, in Old English is the language of "Beowulf" was GRENLONTHE and means "dwellers in the Glade," It's also in the American Dictionary of Surnames.

The Greenland's from the records I've found were always, "non-conforming." That is, they broke with Roman Catholic Church at least as early as King Henry VIII's separation. They also separated from the chruch of England and were usually numbered in the ranks of Quakers, Methodists, Baptists and above all Puritans. Some, of course, were less concerned about their religion and either remained in the Church of England or didn't belong at all, or just nominally so. They supported opposition to the Stuart monarchs, and were apparently admirers of Oliver Cromwell. Huntingdon, in England, was his hometown.
