Many thanks to Barry Ennever who sent away for a copy of the FIRST marriage for my James Holsworth Greenhalgh born 1821 in London, England; he died 1870 at Valognes, France.

James H. was a surgeon as was his brother Dr. Robert Greenhalgh (1819-1887) of London, England. They were brothers to my 3X great grandmother Mary Sarah Greenhalgh (1824-1904) who married Edward Hawxby Walker. Their father was James Greenhalgh senior, born 1785 who has been a major brick wall for me for eight years. I have no idea where he was born, or who his parents were. He died October 12, 1850 at Upper Norton Street, Marylebone, London. Their mother was Mary Ann Boyce born 1796 at St. Pancras, daughter of Robert Boyce and Mary Horton. Mary Ann re-married to William Holswoth or Holdsworth after James' death and they moved to Brighton, Sussex where she died in 1868. Mary Ann's only brother was George John Boyce 1793-1853, father of artists Joanna Mary Boyce Wells and George Price Boyce.

The details of James Holsworth Greenhalgh's first marriage were:

#375 Date was Sept. 8, 1841

James Holsworth Greenhalgh, Full age, Bachelor, Gentleman (his Profession) residing at Richmond Road and Anna MACE, Full age, a WIDOW, also residing at Richmond Road, were married by License in the Parish Church at Hackney, Middlesex. Father of Groom was James Greenhalgh whose Profession was "Gentleman" and Father of Bride was William DATE, also a Gentleman. Names of witnesses were: John Dalston Jones and William Daniell.

I have no idea what happened to Anna Date/Widow Mace- do not know how old she was, if she had any children from HER first marriage (to a Mr. Mace). I would like to know if she and James H. had any children, I wonder how long they were married and what happened to Anna.

By about 1848, James H. was with a woman named Sarah Ann Dyke, whose first husband was John Sherrott. Sarah Ann had two daughters from her first marriage. We do not think James H. and Sarah Ann ever got married, because they may never have been able to get divorces from their first spouses. James and Sarah had one, possibly two children at Jersey, then five more Greenhalgh children in France. James H. and Sarah both died in France. I am trying to find information and possibly living descendents of James Holsworth Greenhalgh and eventually find out who James Greenhalgh senior's parents were and where he was born.

If anyone has any information about James, his father or mother, Sarah Ann, or James' first wife Anna Date Mace, please post here or contact me directly.

Thanks from Nora
