I apologise for my quip about Dunbar.
Having visited the Mormom family search site I can see that you have done a lot of work in getting back as far as you have. I have only got my Greenfields back to the middle 1700s. It is also worth commenting on the occurence of the name Archibald in your family. Of over 11,000 Greenfields born between 1837 and 1947 only six had the first name of Archibald. Also they all occured between 1889 and 1917 and all in the south of England. The surname Greenfield is not that common in Scotland. It certainly does not appear in the top 100 surnames. The problem is that you need that one reference buried in a document somewhere to find when and where your first Greenfield pops up in Scotland. As I point out in my Web site most of the origional Greenfields come from Sussex or Lincolnshire. The American experience is also complicated by people moving in from eastern Europe and anglicizing their name upon arrival, but that is not your case.
If I come across anything that might help then I will be in touch.
Cheers
Roger Greenfield
