Moderator of the Church of Scotland in 1796-7, and Professor of Rhetoric & Belles Lettres at Edinburgh University, he fled to Corbridge in Northumberland in Dec.1798 after a scandal, and lived under the assumed name of Richardson (or Rutherfurd). He was possibly sheltered by Bryan Donkin, originally of Sandoe.
