Greene/Green, entry 1840s to mid-west from England

Help! I have a brick wall! My great great grandfather, Phillip Green(e), and his brother, William Green(e) came to the U.S. in the early 1840s from England (with wives and some children). They settled in the mid-west. They had more children born in Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri. The families finally settled in St. Louis. Both Phillip, born about 1817, and William, born about 1812, were cobblers by trade. Phillip's wife was named Harriet. I am told that the old men wanted to become Americans, dropped the "e" of the name, cut out mutton, in short, dropped anything English.

We have lost contact with the Missouri Greens, my uncle went to visit his great uncle, Phillip, in the late twenties, in (I think) Mexico, Missouri.

Any help would be appreciated!
