Nicholas GREENBERRY went from England to Maryland in 1674. He had three daughters and one son. The son had no male heirs that survived, and the name died out as a surname. At least I am aware of noone of that surname in the U.S. prior to 1800 other than Nicholas, his son Charles, and a son of Charles that died young.

Nicholas GREENBERRY was at one time commander in chief of all military forces in MD, and was for a time acting Governor of the state.

Greenberry was a popular given name among his descendants. From there, with families naming children after brothers-in-law that had married into the family, the name spread among families that are not descended from him.
